Bonding Through Understanding
Hello, and thank you for visiting my site.
The fact that you are here shows that you are a responsible pet owner who desires to have a close bond with your pet. I have many years of pet ownership, and my love for animals is the primary reason for creating this site. I hope that the experience I have gained through ownership, Dog breeding, and dog rehabilitation can be beneficial to you.
While I have had pets all my life, I learned the most about them when I got Sandy (Who is in most of these pictures)as a puppy. Nine years before having her, I had an enormous English Mastiff who was easier to train. Despite what we often think, a more intelligent dog can be more difficult to train if they have a certain mentality. When I met Sandy, she was among 6 of her litter mates, and after playing with them all and soaking up their cuteness through getting trampled and licked all over, I thought to myself," I wonder which one will pick me". So, I dropped to my knees and waited to see who liked me the most. Sandy came bounding over. She then put her paws on my thighs and looked me straight in the eyes. I thought "she chose me" to myself and excitedly said to my husband, "She's magical," and proceeded to beg to take her home. However, after bringing her home and trying my best to train her, I learned that she was a genius at learning quickly, which delighted me! However, I was very confused as to why she would only listen if it were advantageous to her. This was a struggle for me as I wanted so badly to enjoy the bond of closeness that comes with a dog who isn't dragging you on a leash and calling all the shots with their behavior. I was disappointed that, despite having dogs most of my life, I couldn't figure her out. I decided to go to the library and find some books that could help me understand her. (2004 was a land before Google) As I pored over them, I kept seeing the Phrase "Alpha mentality" and finally I came to a book that better detailed what that meant and how to work with it. It was like a hidden key that I found to unlock the best dog ever, albeit through plenty of training! The biggest thing I needed to do was train myself. I needed to understand how her brain worked. I had to learn to allow my patience to outlast her stubbornness, and I had to curb my expectations. I started to enjoy training by celebrating each small victory and not taking each mistake as a sign that I was a failure at dog ownership. So much of my experience has been gained through trial and error in training her. Then, after breeding her, we ended up having to take back one of her puppies, due to her not having been trained. She had become the biggest monster puppy I have ever dealt with! She was 6 months old and 60 pounds of power and defiance. I thought Sandy was difficult. Silky was 20X worse!!! However, I am grateful for everything I learned through rehabilitating her! So these things made me very aware of how a beautiful full-bred dog could end up in a shelter, and often after being returned because of behavior issues, a few times would be termed "unadoptable" and be put to sleep. I hope to help others with the skills I gained through this experience. Silky, after about 20 months of reconditioning, turned out to be an amazing family dog. So, it was all worth it. I hope this helps inspire you to put in the work your pet needs to become the best version of themselves they can be, and take some pressure off yourself to do it all perfectly.
